The victims and the horrors of the division will be commemorated at the historical site

The Berlin Wall Foundation is situated at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse and extends alongside the former border strip. The history of this street illustrates what impact the Berlin Wall had on Berlin. It documents those attempting to escape the dictatorship by fleeing to the West or to make a stand against it. At this memorial site of German divison there will be the central commemorative ceremony on 13 August 2011.
Readings about the lives of people killed at the Berlin Wall

The commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall will start during the night of 13 August with readings about the lives of people killed at the Wall. Their biographies will be read in the Chapel of Reconciliation from 1.00 a.m. until 8.30 a.m.
Event commemorating the building of the Berlin Wall
The central commemorative ceremony on 13 August 2011 will take place from 10.00 a.m. until 12.00 a.m. at the Berlin Wall Memorial during the presence of the Federal President and other personalities. The ceremony will commemorate the victims of the division. This will be followed by the opening of the second part of the new open-air exhibition, which illustrates the consequences of the closing of the border for the people in East- an West-Berlin. In the Chapel of Reconciliation there will be an ecumenical prayer. Afterwards, wreaths will be laid at the memorial to the victims of the communist dictatorship. Finally a moment of silence to remember the horrors of the city’s division will then be observed throughout the city.

After the commemorative ceremony, a programme of events marking 13 August will take place on the area of the Berlin Wall Memorial: The programme will include interviews with contemporary witnesses and artistic performances on a stage in Ackerstrasse, in more personal atmosphere conservations with contemporary witnesses, readings and guides for children and a dance-performance.

In addition to the programme on stage, the Berlin Wall Memorial invites you to a conversation with contemporary witnesses in the garden of the close-by hotel “Grenzfall”. There will be readings of autobiographical texts from common authors about the everyday life in Berlin between 1961 and 1989. Furthermore contemporary witnesses will talk with pupils about their memories and experiences. Questions are welcome.
“Contemporary History Information Mile”

Victims’ associations, the border area museums, memorials, remembrance sites, and many other initiatives and institutions will provide information about their services and activities at the “Contemporary History Information Mile”.

From 11 – 13 August, there will be an open-air cinema on the grounds of the Berlin Wall Memorial, featuring interesting films from the time of the building of the Wall.
