1961. On a Sunday in August

1961. ON A SUNDAY IN AUGUST
Contemporary witness project commemorating the 50th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall in Kulturraum Zwingli-Kirche, Rudolfstraße 14, 10424 Berlin-Friedrichshain

29 July until 11 September 2011

On the morning of 13 August 1961, a Sunday, construction suddenly began on the wall that would isolate East Berlin and divide a city of millions of inhabitants for 28 years. Its building had been planned in secret and took the world by surprise. Many people’s biographies provide an indication of the significance of this event and bring memories to life. In its workshop with contemporary witnesses, KulturRaum Zwingli Church, which is located near the Oberbaumbrücke (a bridge linking the eastern and western parts of the city) and the East Side Gallery will document the stories of the apparently ordinary lives of people on both sides of the River Spree in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.
50 years since the building of the Berlin Wall. “Ordinary lives” – this perspective permits an individual angle on the events of those days. A presentation of accounts by contemporary witness as part of a six-week summer project is planned. An installation of 20 large-format panels will be suspended in the nave of Zwingli Church. We will be confronted with the faces of the contemporary witnesses in 1961 and 2011, whose stories will be told in texts. Videos will be shown at three points, featuring interviews with 6 – 8 contemporary witnesses, each lasting 8 – 10 minutes. The installation will be rounded off with a supporting programme of readings and films on the topic.
